Open for Submissions
October 1, 2023 — March 1, 2024

The Monadnock Writers’ Group (MWG) will accept submissions to its George Duncan Essay Contest beginning on October 1, 2023. The contest is open to all Monadnock Region high school students, including those in public, private, and homeschools. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2024. Winners, announced in late March, will receive cash awards and be invited to read their essays at MWG’s April 20th meeting at the Peterborough Town Library.

George Duncan, an award-winning copywriter, was a long-time and active MWG member. His Democracy Held Hostage is a compilation of Letters to the Editor appearing in local papers between 2004 and 2008. George believed that speaking out is important, and he did so most effectively. It is in his honor and in his memory that MWG sponsors this contest.
While today’s teens have a panoply of social media through which to share opinions or make statements, we hold that it continues to be important for all of us, not just teens, to be able to express our thoughts and ideas in written form. Therefore, we encourage area high school students, whether home-schooled, or in a private or a public school, to participate in the contest. To that end, we hope that parents and other caregivers, teachers, mentors, and school administrators will encourage them to do so as well.
